What is coaching?

The International Coach Federation defines coaching as "partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential."

More specifically a master coach will:
 - Ask insightful questions to help clarify what is most important to you and develop a plan/vision that is consistent with your values and priorities.
 - Uncover obstacles that have been holding you back and work with you to develop strategies to overcome these obstacles.
 - Help you establish better goals and partner with you in realizing those goals.
 - Provide inspiration and accountability.

How does coaching differ from other professions?

Coaching versus Counseling:
Counseling generally aims to heal mental and psychological issues and typically examines PAST events. It often centers on diagnosing a ‘problem’ that needs to be addressed. Coaching involves no such diagnosis and in fact, coaches tend to see opportunities, not problems. Coaches shift the focus from “why” to “how.” Coaching is results oriented, maintaining a focus on the current situation and actively developing plans for the FUTURE. Counseling focuses on helping people to live functional lives. Coaching focuses on helping functional people live extraordinary lives.

Coaching versus Consulting:
Business consultants generally use their training and knowledge to prescribe a course of action to meet an objective. They TELL the client what needs
to be done and they often perform the required work.  Coaching is about ASKING the right questions while empowering clients to create their own solutions and become the drivers of their own success. Through improved communication, focus and accountability, coaching dramatically increases clients’ capacity to achieve better results on their own. Coaching does not deliver a single solution – it increases the client’s own ability to repeatedly develop optimal solutions.

What are some typical reasons why someone would work with a coach?

 - There is something significant at stake -- a challenge, opportunity or goal -- and it is urgent and compelling.
 - There is a perceived gap in knowledge, skills, confidence, motivation or resources.
 - There is a desire to accelerate results. - Work and life are out of balance, and this is creating unhappiness or a lack of fulfillment.
 - There is a desire for a course correction or reevaluation in work or life.
 - An individual has a style of communicating that is ineffective or is not supporting the achievement of one’s goals.
 - There is a lack of clarity, and there are choices that need to be made.
 - An individual desires work and life to be simpler, less complicated.
 - There is a need and a desire to better organized and more efficient in self-managing.

Is Coaching Right for Me?

To determine if you could benefit from coaching, start by summarizing what you would like to accomplish through coaching. If you have a fairly clear idea of the desired outcome, a coaching partnership is an excellent approach for developing strategies to more easily achieve that outcome.

Since coaching is a partnership, ask yourself how valuable you find it to collaborate and to consider other viewpoints and perspectives. Also, ask yourself if you are ready to devote the time and energy necessary to make real changes in your career or personal life. If the answer to these questions is yes, then coaching is an excellent way for you to grow and develop, and realize your goals.

How does your coaching process work?

It begins with completion of the Energy Leadership Index Assessment and the follow on debrief.  The assessment does a tremendous job of furthering the client's understanding of themselves and identifying factors that may be limiting their path to greater success.  The debrief process also affords an opportunity to better understand the differing levels of energy and to experience the sensation that goes with positively shifting your energy.  In addition, the assessment provides a foundation and understanding that is invaluable if we determine to continue the coaching relationship.

If we determine that an ongoing coaching relationship makes sense, you will then complete a client information form and sign a coaching agreement that more specifically defines how the coaching relationship will work.  Coaching sessions are typically conducted over the phone and consist of three 45 minute sessions per month.  The usual term begins with three months, with monthly extension options available thereafter.  Payment for coaching services is required in advance.

Prior to entering into the coaching agreement we will have preliminarily defined the objectives of our coaching relationship.  We will also have an understanding of how you wish to be coached and what type of role you would like me to play in this process.
